Course Overview

This NCFE qualification allows learners to develop the fundamental technical skills and underpinning knowledge and understanding required to become competent in their job role. The course is practical, underpinned by the theoretical and technical knowledge applied to the everyday role of a lead practitioner in adult care.

Course Content

To complete the Level 4 Adult Care Diploma the learner must achieve a minimum of 70 credits,  36 credits from the mandatory units, and a minimum of 34 credits from the optional units. At least 55 credits must be achieved at Level 4 or above.

Mandatory units include the following
  • Lead Communication in Adult Care Settings
  • Develop, Maintain and Use Records and Reports Knowledge/Skills 
  • Personal Development in Adult Care Settings Knowledge/Skills 
  • Lead Inclusive Practice in Adult Care Settings Knowledge/Skills 
  • Lead Health and Safety in Adult Care Settings Knowledge/Skills 
  • Facilitate Person-centred Assessment to Support Wellbeing 
  • Facilitate Support Planning to Ensure Positive Outcomes for Individuals and to Support Wellbeing Professional Practice in Adult Care Settings Working in Partnership with Others 
  • Understand Personalisation in Care and Support services 
  • Understand Safeguarding and Protection in Adult Care Settings 
  • Safeguard Children and Young People Who Are Present in the Adult Care Sector

Entry Requirement

This course is for learners employed in a lead role in the care sector, e.g. Team Leader, Senior Care Worker, Senior Re-enablement Worker, Senior Therapy Assistant. 

Learners must be +18 years old and have a minimum standard of Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths.


The learners are supported by an occupational competent business trainer using an e-portfolio platform who will meet with them on a regular basis. They will use a variety of different assessment methods to assess units holistically for this qualification which may include:

  • Observation of practice by the assessor or senior work colleagues
  • Work products
  • Professional discussions
  • Case studies.

Where does this course lead to

Learners can choose to progress to the Level 5 Leadership for Adult Care Diploma or specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work and use the qualification to advance in their chosen career pathway.
